How to Sell Your Midcentury Modern Furniture

Midcentury Modern furniture is a broad term used to describe furniture from the 1930s to the mid-1960s and is always fun to find at local estate sales.

Midcentury modern furniture is making a comeback thanks to its clean lines and classic style, which caters a simpler way of living.

But how do you go about selling these pieces if you inherit them, or are looking to downsize? We have found that using the estate sale format is a great approach, especially if you have several pieces to sell.

Sell at an Estate Sale

We know what you’re saying – of course and estate sale company wants us to sell with them. But hear us out. By and large, potential buyers are looking for estate sales that are selling mid century modern furniture, so using this approach to sell will likely be successful.

Selling your pieces on Craigslist or Offer Up might seem like a good idea, but selling pieces one-by-one, and then having to negotiate a price and pick up can be taxing.

Selling at an estate sale means you will have an expert to advertise your sale, price your furniture, and discuss the piece with potential buyers. We are committed to making this as pain free and financially enjoyable as possible.

How to Prepare

It’s important for you to understand what you have, and how you can get their piece ready for sale. If you know how hold the piece is, its materials, or designer, you’re in good shape. Recognizable brands include Knoll, Pearsall, Broyhill, Danish designer Finn Juhl, and American Designer Milo Baughman.

Additionally, if you need to make repairs, do that as well. A usable piece will sell for more than a piece that someone must repair.

Finally, we will discuss the sale price. Remember, items at estate sales are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, so set a realistic expectation for the sale price.

To best prepare yourself, you can do a quick google search to see what other similar pieces are selling for.

When Should You Donate?

Remember, buyers want a piece that is aesthetically pleasing and functional, so if it’s faded, or the fabric is broken down, it might be better to donate the piece, or price it accordingly. You never know, the piece may end up in the hands of a very capable buyer who brings the piece new life.
